Set up the display with an AI
You can describe the setup you want in your own words and let an AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, ...) write it as a configuration file: the mode, the colours, the CAN signals and everything else. You load the file into the display on the website. The page checks the file and shows every change before anything reaches the display, so a mistake can't change it.
First try loading a file by hand, with the example below. Then let an AI write yours.
Load a configuration file
This example sets up Glass (dash) for a car whose coolant temperature is on the CAN bus. It shows the coolant temperature on the bottom arc, makes the power and charging bars amber and the arc orange, and sets the brightness to 70 %. The regen dots are turned off for a car without regen.

| In the file | What it does |
|---|---|
"mode": "GLASS_DASH" | Shows Glass (dash) |
"signals" → "Coolant temp" | A CAN signal: the extended ID 0x18FF50E5, the first byte, the temperature in °C as the byte − 40 |
"brightness": 70 | Display brightness 70 % |
"gd_source": 6 | Bottom arc shows: CAN signal (option 6 of its list) |
"gd_signal": "Coolant temp" | The bottom arc's signal: the one above |
"gd_name", "gd_unit", "gd_min", "gd_max" | COOLANT, °C, from 0 to 120 |
"gd_bar_color", "gd_charge_color", "gd_arc_color" | Amber power and charging bars, an orange-red bottom arc |
"dregen_signal": null | Regen level: Not used, so the regen dots stay off |
Everything not in the file stays as it is.
-
Connect the display on the Resolve Display page (Settings).
-
Download your configuration first (Configuration file, below Activity). It is your way back: loading it again puts everything as it was.
-
Save the example as
example.jsonand click Load. -
The page checks the file against your display. For this file it says 8 settings, 2 signals and the Mode will change and lists them, old → new:
Change Old → new General · Display brightness 100 % → 70 % Glass · Bottom arc shows Motor temperature (°C) → CAN signal Glass · Bottom arc name “MOTOR TEMP” → “COOLANT” Glass · Bottom arc start, end −20 → 0, 80 → 120 Glass · Power bar color, Charging bar color, Bottom arc color → #FFB000, #FFB000, #FF5A36 Glass · Bottom arc the motor temperature → Coolant temp: 0x18FF50E5 Sport, Glass · Regen level → not used Display mode Sport → Glass A file with a problem (a value out of range, an unknown signal, a broken
dbcline) is refused, and Activity lists each problem with where it is in the file. -
Click Apply. The display redraws once, the page reads it back, and Activity says whether every value took. Look at the display: the bottom arc now reads COOLANT.
To go back, load the file you downloaded in step 2, or use Restore defaults.
Let an AI write the file
- Download your configuration (as above). You get
resolve-display-<date>.json: every setting and CAN signal of every mode. - Open your AI assistant and start a new chat.
- Give it three things:
- the downloaded file (attach it, or paste its text);
- this documentation: paste the link
https://resolve-ev.com/docs/resolve_display/configuration-file(or, if the assistant can't open links, save that page and attach it). It lists every setting, what its numbers mean and how CAN signals are written; - your car's
.dbcfile, if the setup needs CAN signals the display doesn't know yet.
- Say what you want (the prompt and the examples below), and ask for the whole file back as JSON.
- Load the answer as above: save it as a
.jsonfile, click Load, check the list of changes and click Apply. If the page refuses it, give the problems from Activity back to the assistant and ask it to fix the file.
A prompt to start from
Copy it, then fill in the last line:
You are editing the configuration file of a Resolve Display, a round dashboard display for electric cars. The format is documented here: https://resolve-ev.com/docs/resolve_display/configuration-file. Follow it exactly:
- Use only the keys that are in my file. Choices are option numbers (0 is the first option in the documentation's list), colours are
"#RRGGBB", texts at most 32 characters without;or#.- CAN signals go in
"signals", each with its CAN"id"("extended": truefor a 29-bit ID) and its DBCSG_line in"dbc". Copy theSG_line from my DBC file exactly when it has the signal. A setting uses a signal by its name;nullmeans Not used.- The dashes, Sport (dash) and Glass (dash), share their CAN signals (
dsoc_signal,dvolt_signal, ...). The left gauge of Sport (dash) (lg_*) and the bottom arc of Glass (dash) (gd_*) work like a gauge: to show my own signal there, set its*_sourceto the CAN signal option and give its signal, name, unit and scale. Picking a source doesn't set the name, unit or scale: write them.- Don't change anything I don't ask for. Give me the whole file back as JSON, nothing else.
Here is my file: [attached]. Here is my car's DBC: [attached].
What I want: [your wishes]
Example wishes
- "Show the coolant temperature on the bottom arc of Glass (dash): CAN ID 0x18FF50E5 (extended), the first byte, Intel, factor 1, offset −40, 0 to 120 °C, named COOLANT."
- "My car has no regen: set the power bar's regen max value to 0 and the regen level to Not used."
- "Use the attached DBC's battery signals for the dashes: state of charge
BMS_SOC, voltagePack_Voltage, currentPack_Current(positive while discharging)." - "Show the motor temperature in Fahrenheit on the left gauge of Sport (dash), 0 to 250 °F."
- "Make every white detail amber (#FFB000) on both dashes and set the brightness to 60 %."
- "Warn on the Warning screen above 95 °C on the coolant signal, with the text ENGINE HOT."
Tips
- Small steps work best. Ask for one or two changes at a time, load them, look at the display, then the next.
- CAN details matter. The CAN ID, start bit, length, byte order (Intel/Motorola), signedness,
factor and offset must match your car exactly. If you have a
.dbcfile, give it to the assistant: it can copy theSG_line from it. - Check the list before you apply. It is exactly what will happen: if something there isn't what you asked for, click Cancel and tell the assistant.
- Try it without the car. While the page is connected and no CAN data arrives, the dashes show example values for every signal that is set up, so you can see the colours and the layout on the bench (Screens).
- Nothing leaves your computer through the page: the file is read in your browser. What you give an AI assistant goes to that assistant's service.
